College Scholarships

Not too long ago, Jennifer Rotman from College Scholarships.org contacted me with some helpful information for College Scholarships. If you are a college student or bound for college, and you are looking for scholarship information or help, this site can be helpful to you. If you or someone you know are in the position of looking for financial help for college, College Scholarships.org may be able to provide you with the information you need.

The website is full of information on Scholarships, grants and student loans - along with many related resources. From what I have seen so far, it is very thorough and a great resource. Here's what Jennifer had to say:

We've completed a unique and succinct graphical time line of what U.S. college students really go through financially when securing education loans.
Just like your blog, we put a tremendous effort into raising awareness to students. Many, unfortunately, often make financial decisions they later regret. If you feel the time line is beneficial to your audience and serves a positive social purpose, please feel free to share it with them.
As someone who went through undergrad working while attending school full time, I can appreciate the helpful information this site brings.  Having additional financial aid can make a big difference in your college and future career decisions.

I hope you have found this post and information helpful.  What other resources do you recommend for college scholarship and related information?  Leave us your thoughts in the comments.

7 Tips To Living A Healthy Frugal Life

|

New to FrugalNYC? Click here to add FrugalNYC to your RSS reader or Subscribe to FrugalNYC by Email.

Keeping healthy can make living your life much more satisfying.  I'm sure you've all heard others say that health comes first.  Despite knowing this, many of us forget that and get too busy to keep ourselves healthy physically, mentally, financially and spiritually.

Here are some tips to living a healthy Frugal life.  These tips do not cost you anything except your time and a little dedication to living a healthy frugal life.  Over time, the benefits can compound in ways you can't imagine.

Eat Healthy - Eating a balanced diet is better for you than any fad diet around.  Eat less meat, eat more vegetables and grains.

Excercise Regularly - If you think you are out of shape, start excercising.  Start small, walk around the block.  It costs nothing but a few minutes of your time.  Do this for a week and then add and extra block every week.  You'll be walking for miles at the end of the year.

Do Things By Hand - We all have gadgets and machines for all kinds of things in our lives.  Dishwashers, laundry machines, lawn mowers, roombas, etc..  Take the time to do dishes by hand, or wash a t-shirt by hand after you excercise.  You don't have to do this all the time, but doing it once or a few times a week can reduce the use of electricity and other fuels we depend on so much.  Most of the time, I find doing dishes by hand to be a good time to think.  No one bothers me during this time and I can clear my head.

Enjoy Nature - Get rid of that MP3 player and just listen to the birds and the wind blowing through the leaves.  Taking a few minutes to just walk in a park or visit a State Park can do wonders for you.  It's free, the air is better and it can help you lead a healthier life.

Give - Giving to others, whether by listening to someone who needs an ear or donating your time and money to a cause you can identify with is GOOD FOR YOU.  Doing good pays dividends in many ways.  Find a problem in your life or in your neighborhood and give to this great cause!  Start with your family, take time to play with your kids, or take time to really listen to your significant other.  In time, your life will change in ways you can't imagine.

Declutter - I have too much clutter, it just never seems to go away.  Clutter distracts you from doing what you want to do.  Clutter can take a physical form or it can be digital, such as too much email.  Get rid of your clutter.  The easiest way to live a clutter free life is to consume less.  Junk could be anything that you don't need, buy less of it.  Give it away or sell it to someone who does need it.  I've been selling items I don't need on craigslist.  Live minimally.

Enjoy Life - Figure out what makes you tick.  Engage yourself in doing things you love.  Whether it's writing, blogging, photography, running, working out, helping others etc... No matter what you like to do, make sure you make time and schedule it in.  Put first things first and enjoy your life.  You can live only today, but always plan for a better future!

I hope you have enjoyed reading this post.  Do you have tips to live a Healthy Frugal life?  Please share your tips in the comments.

"Lowcostume" hunting in NYC

|
New to FrugalNYC? Click here to add FrugalNYC to your RSS reader or Subscribe to FrugalNYC by Email.

I recently received an email from David Bukszpan regarding a Low-Cost Costume Swap Event organized by Goodwill Industries of Greater New York and Northern New Jersey, Inc.  He says "folks are encouraged to bring a bag of about $5 worth of slightly used clothes and hunt through what comes in to put together a low-cost costume (I prefer "lowcostume") of their own."
Here's some more info:
Goodwill Industries of Greater New York and Northern New Jersey is holding a Low-Cost Costume design competition online. To help people in the city get what they need for cheap, creative costumes, Goodwill is also throwing a Low-Cost Costume design/clothing swap at Boxcar Lounge Sunday, Oct 25th from 3pm-7pm, complete with crafters on-hand to help out with ideas. There'll be drink specials, good music, and tons of clothes for anyone and everyone to sort through - admission is either one bag of lightly-used, freshly-laundered clothes, or, if you don't have that, a $5 donation to Goodwill (and our community outreach services, work training programs, and recycling initiatives) - and you can leave with any clothes or crafts you want.
The Low-Cost Costume competition and swap is Goodwill's attempt to help to put creativity over consumerism one holiday a year. Why add to landfills with a generic plastic costume made by kids in sweatshops when you can come together with neighbors, learn a few crafting skills, and make a one-of-a-kind costume from stuff no one was wearing anymore anyways? The swap gives us all more options of just what lightly-used clothes to base our costumes from, and encourages people in the neighborhood to share their skills and fashion.
There is also an Online Low-Cost Costume Design Competition on their Facebook Page running from Friday, Oct 16 through Saturday, Oct 24.  Participants can put up photos of their own Low-Cost Costumes from years' past and the site will show off the most popular - and offer them a chance to guest blog as a Low-Cost Costume expert on the Goodwill Industries of Greater New York and Northern New Jersey, Inc. sites as Halloween nears.

EVENT: Online Low-Cost Costume Design Competition and Real-Life Costume Design Clothing Swap

WHERE:

  • For Online Low-Cost Costume Design Competition details: http://goodwillnynj.wordpress.com
  • Real-Life Costume Design Clothing Swap will be held at BOXCAR LOUNGE (168 Avenue B, between East 10 and East 11 Street, NYC)

WHEN:

  • Online Low-Cost Costume Design Competition runs Friday, Oct 16 - Saturday, Oct 24
  • Real-Life Costume Design Clothing Swap will be held Sunday, Oct 25 from 3pm-7pm

Thanks for sharing this helpful frugal information with us David.

Halloween is already here in Central Park.  I mentioned the Harlem Meer a while back and today the Central Park Conservancy is presenting a demonstration on how to carve and decorate a pumpkin to create a one-of-a-kind jack-o’-lantern.  If you've never tried this before, this is a good chance for you to try it.

A limited number of pumpkins are provided on a first-come, first-served basis. You can bring your own if you have one. Carving tools, decorations, and inspiration provided for all!

Refreshments and time for networking are included. No advance registration is required. This program is part of the Central Park Conservancy's Halloween in Central Park programming series.  This event is located at the Charles A. Dana Discovery Center, Central Park (located inside the Park at 110th Street between Fifth and Lenox Avenues).  There is no charge for this, so it is absolutely FREE.  If you would like additional information, you can call (212) 860-1370.

Avoid spending money you don't have

|

New to FrugalNYC? Click here to add FrugalNYC to your RSS reader or Subscribe to FrugalNYC by Email.

This is a guest post by Owen Smith, a finance writer with over 10 years of experience. The arrticle will look at 3 ways in which you can avoid spending money you don't have.

1. Chop up your credit cards

Using your credit cards to pay for things is a good way of spreading your costs - providing you can pay it off at the end of the month. However, you might find you are unable to repay your debts, and this is when they become a problem.

To avoid this problem, the simplest solution (and the best) is to chop up your credit cards. If they aren't there, you can't spend on them! If you have outstanding debts on your credit cards then try your best to repay these as soon as you can - and don't be tempted to spend any more on them. (You might want to keep one credit card for emergencies.)

As you are probably aware, credit cards come with high interest rates, so that $60 petrol you put on your credit card won't cost you $60 if you fail to repay it, it will be more like $70, and then $70 if you fail to repay it again….and so on.

2. Don't be tempted by store cards

Store cards often come with 'introductory gifts' to entice you into signing up - but don't let this tempt you, unless you are certain that you will be able to repay the outstanding balance.

Store cards are known for coming with high interest rates (higher than credit cards), and can also come with serious consequences if you fail to repay them.

The rule here is that store cards should be avoided - unless you can easily clear the balance.

3. Create a budget

Finally, to make sure you avoid spending money you don't have, you should create a budget.

Write down all the money you earn/receive each month, and then write down all the money you spend each month - this should give you an indication of how much money you will have left over after you have paid all your bills, etc. And will also give you a greater control of your finances - which should help you see if you are spending money you don't have.

If you find that you don't have enough money each month, you could look for areas where you are able to make cut backs to save yourself money.

Budgeting should let you see how much money you have available to spend each week - so you can draw this out of the bank and keep it with you, again making sure you don't spend more money than you actually have. If you find that you need to lend money short term for that car or house repair, try lending from family or consider a cheap loan before heading straight for the credit card.

Is Co-Working Office Space For You?

|
New to FrugalNYC? Click here to add FrugalNYC to your RSS reader or Subscribe to FrugalNYC by Email.

With more than 10 million Americans self-employed, low-cost shared office space is becomming a big market.  Luckily, New York City has a number of options if you are part of this Tribe.

You get many benefits from this setup.  We all love how much the internet and social media has made communication easier and faster, but there is much to be said for face to face communication.  Often, the most important meetings and deals are made and done in person.  Co-working office space is an ideal environment for that.  You meet business minded people and still keep the costs low.  The best part, if you don't like it, you can leave.

Equipment and facilities may differ, but most include things like unlimited high-speed internet access, fax machines, printers, a receptionist, a phone, a desk and conference rooms.

Here are some NYC based Co-working Office space providers:

  1. New Work City (part of Coworking Visa program)
  2. Sun Shine Suites
  3. Brooklyn Creative League
  4. In Good Company (for Women, are men welcome?)
  5. Jelly (something a little different)
Temporary Office Space
Does anyone know if there are trial periods with any of the above spaces?

We'll keep this post updated and tweet updates.  Do you use co-working office spaces?  We would love to hear your experience.  Please leave us comments on what you think about co-working office spaces.

Frugal Friday - FREE FREE FREE

|

New to FrugalNYC? Click here to add FrugalNYC to your RSS reader or Subscribe to FrugalNYC by Email.

*NOTE* This post posted to The 405 Club blog as part of ongoing Frugal Friday posts.

One of the greatest things I love about NYC is the numerous FREE activities you can find all around the city.  Aside from paying for travel, you can find FREE things to do just about any day!  That's one of the reasons why I started the FrugalNYC blog.  Today I wanted to bring a couple of these upcoming FREE activities in NYC to your attention.

If you enjoy a little time in the park you're sure to enjoy lounging in Bryant Park.  I wrote all about the festivities going on in Bryant Park until October the 9th earlier this week.  Today you will find the Ensemble ACJW, the performance arm of Carnegie Hall’s The Academy, at Bryant Park from 6:00 p.m.–7:30 p.m.  Seating starts around 5 p.m. so get there early for a good seat!

If you get to Bryant Park early, you can try Petanque anytime from 11:30 a.m.–6:00 p.m.  Learn to play pétanque, the popular European game anchored in precision, patience, and camaraderie from members of La Boule New Yorkaise, NYC’s championship-winning club, in Bryant Park.

If the park is not your thing, you still have time to Kayak on the Hudson, for FREE!  This is available on Saturdays and Sunday from 10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. at Riverside Park South (72nd Street on Hudson river).  The FREE Kayaking events will continue until October 11, 2009.  You don't even need to make an appointment, just head on over and enjoy exploring the Hudson from a different vantage point!  You get about 20 minutes per session, but you can get additional sessions if the lines are not too long.  Just bring your swimming ability, wear the provided life jacket and enjoy the endless fun for FREE.

Don't forget to catch the Wizard of OZ streamed for FREE all day on Saturday October 3, 2009.  If you have a pre-school or early elementary school age child, come by the FrugalNYC blog to get a FREE copy of the Zula Patrol DVD and a 30 day FREE membership to Zula World.  This giveaway ends today October 2, 2009.
